A good start toward that end would be to make a list of what it is you want to haul with your new trailer. Now pick up a tape measure and go measure the length and width of that tractor or that Jeep with the oversize mudder tires. Most trailers of the utility or car hauler varieties come in standard widths such as 76, 82, or 102 inches. The widest trailers will either be of the flat bed or driver over fenders variety.

Lengths come generally from eight feet to 40 feet. An eight foot trailer is going to be really hard to back up when maneuvering. A forty foot trailer might also be hard to park and it might hang up on steep driveways. The most popular utility trailer in my experience is the 16 ft wood floor trailer with slide out ramps and 7,000 lbs gross vehicle weight. That means the trailer weighs somewhere around 2000 and it can carry a 5000 lb load.

Gross load ratings are important. The most common ratings are 3.5K, 7K, 10K, 14K, 20K and 21K, with “K” indicating 1,000 lbs.
